Radiation-induced senescent cells may provide a microenvironment that facilitates tumor growth and recurrence. New strategies are currently emerging aimed at improving radiotherapy by eliminating the negative effects of senescent cells. The symposium will cover: 1) intrinsic and extrinsic factors determining senescence-associated phenotypes, 2) senolytic and senomorphic strategies to interfere with therapy-induced senescent cells, 3) senescence and other effects of radiation on cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) derived from lung and head and neck cancers, 4) radiation-induced changes in the immunomodulatory effects of CAFs, and 5) glioblastoma recurrence driven by radiotherapy-induced senescence of tumor and normal brain cells.

Every day we are collecting data which can help us understand how to better treat our patients. However, it is not always straightforward to put all this data together and extract meaningful information. This session will look at different examples of research where big data is needed and focus on the issues which arise with collating, combining, curating and analysing large quantities of data with different examples from retrospective, prospective, reconstructed, public, national and international datasets. Tips and tricks to avoid pitfalls will be given.
