Title: The thesis journey: Learning what we don’t know (yet) This symposium explores the RTT PhD journey as a progression from early confidence to long-term sustainability. Initial stages are shaped by cognitive biases, including the Dunning-Kruger effect and impostor syndrome, as RTTs transition into the role of novice researchers. As the journey evolves, speakers reflect on balancing clinical and academic roles, navigating challenges, and gradually integrating research into practice. Through experience, clarity, independence, and new opportunities emerge. The session concludes by addressing leadership, research capacity building, and sustaining academic careers, highlighting how PhD-trained RTTs can shape innovation and contribute uniquely to radiation oncology.

Online adaptive radiotherapy challenges clinical teams across multiple aspects, including implementation, resources, and education. While continuing professional development is well addressed, the question of initial RTT education remains open. In this debate, four international expert RTTs will explore whether educational programmes require a major overhaul to support the implementation of this major innovation. Rianne de Jong and Claudio Votta will argue in favour of a substantial overhaul, emphasising that online adaptive radiotherapy requires RTTs to acquire new and advanced skills. Opposing them, Helen McNair and Winnie Li will advocate for targeted adaptations within existing frameworks. The stage is set for a stimulating debate, but who will present the stronger arguments? That is for you, the audience, to decide by attending and casting your vote!
