The ESTRO Upper Gastrointestinal Focus Group is a group of experts aiming to foster the current activities of the ESTRO Councils and Committees in upper GI oncology.

The Focus Group is a platform of interaction to facilitate exchange of existing and development of future upper GI activities integrating oesophageal, gastric, liver and pancreatic tumours. The group envisages its role in assisting in the development of technical and clinical guidelines, planning and executing educational events, distributing and analysing surveys, and supporting the dissemination of scientific content. Additionally, ESTRO Councils and Committees can reach out to the Upper GI Focus Group for assistance and for constructive input.

Since upper GI oncology is characterised as an extremely interdisciplinary field, the Upper GI Focus Group aims to harmonize current and future scientific and educational projects not only within ESTRO but also by actively engaging with other professional societies, such as the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), United European Gastroenterologists (UEG) or the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

The Upper GI Focus Group explicitly welcomes the interest and suggestions of all ESTRO members, with the ultimate goal of advancing patient care through the rigorous application of evidence-based medicine and the continuous education of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and radiation therapists.

The Focus Group's initiatives and projects aim to comprehensively incorporate and report on all areas of upper GI oncology and radiation oncology. These are not limited to but include clinical and preclinical research, critical and systematic reviews, imaging modalities, planning and target delineation, irradiation techniques and re-irradiation, the use of artificial intelligence, quality of life, cancer survivorship, assessment and use of biomarkers, education of involved professions, dissemination of relevant research and guidelines, and the assessment of current and future challenges in the field.

The Focus Group composition should facilitate collaboration within and outside Europe, and should also secure synergy, collaboration and alignment within ESTRO:

  • Within ESTRO: SBRT Focus Group, Systemic Therapy Focus Group, GEC ESTRO committee and other ESTRO committees

  • Other societies: ESMO, ESSO, EASL, UEG, EORTC, IASGO, ASTRO, AAPM, IAEA etc.
