Foundations of Leadership in Radiation Oncology 2023

Great leaders are born, not made – or are they? ESTRO believes you can learn to be a leader. This joint ESTRO-CARO-RANZCR course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and attributes to start the pathway to becoming an effective leader. You will learn by examining your own preferences, behaviors and interactions with others; by exploring ways to build effective teams; through lots of interactive activities and much more.

Background

Launched for the first time in 2018, this course introduces foundation principles of effective leadership as they apply to senior trainees and junior practitioners in the radiation oncology professions. The course is directed at professionals interested in developing expertise in leading teams for quality improvement, advocacy and in all situations where they might positively influence the future of our discipline within both local and international settings. The course links to a specific radiation oncology competency knowledge and skill-set developed through Delphi consensus process. (dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.radonc.2017.04.009).

Who should attend?

The target group consists of senior trainees or junior practitioners (approximately first five years after training but more senior applicants welcome) in the radiation oncology professions, including radiation or clinical oncologists, radiation physicists, radiation therapists/technologists, nurses and scientists.

Course Duration

  • Online Introductory webinar 18th April 2023 ( exact time to be confirmed) – 1 hour
  • April – May – mandatary online modules and other homework (approx.. 2-2.5 hours)
  • Day 1 will be on Friday , 12 May – 9am – 5pm
  • Day 2 Saturday, 13 May - lunchtime session 1 hour
  • Day 3 Sunday , 14 may - lunchtime session 1 hour

The course aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and attributes viewed as the building blocks for effective leadership.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, successful learners will be able to:

  • Examine and reflect on their own behaviour, reactions and interactions with team members
  • Describe basic leadership theory and styles as they might apply to practical situations
  • Describe the foundations of effective change management and dealing with conflict
  • Recognise the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion as a leader
  • Explore strategies to establish and lead effective teams
  • Apply basic quality improvement tools to approach an improvement process

 

Course Content

This course consists of an online learning programme of one month duration including homework and live webinar sessions. All sections of the programme are highly interactive and highlight practical relevance to the workplace and facilitate improvements within our discipline.

The course will start with introduction on 18 April 2023 and consist of an introductory 60-minute tutorial with the participants and teachers followed by online exercises and compulsory electronic learning modules to be completed prior to the start of the interactive live sessions. The live sessions will take place on 12-13-14 May 2023.

The course topics include:

  • An introduction to leadership – what it means and why it is our responsibility
  • Basics of leadership theory and styles - how to apply these
  • Self-awareness, personality and emotional intelligence – how they link to leadership
  • Leading and managing change
  • Tools and strategies for leading quality improvement processes
  • Team building and engagement – including dealing with conflict and diversity/inclusion

  • Profession and year of training or year of independent practice (post- qualification)
  • Location of workplace: department/organisation and country
  • Interest and motivation in wishing to attend the course, which may address some/all the following:
    • Previous experiences in which leadership (self or others) was or was not displayed
    • Areas where the applicant feels they particularly need or wish to develop relevant skills and knowledge
    • Leadership goals – short and long-term
    • Other reasons for strong interest in course
    • Demonstration of commitment to engage in all aspects of the course
    • Evidence that course learning will likely lead to a change in behaviour or involvement in activities as a result of participation

Early rates are applied up to three months before the starting date of the course.

Late rates are applied three months before the starting date of the course.

The fee includes the course material, coffees, and lunches.

Advance registration & payment are required.

 

Insurance and cancellation

The organiser does not accept liability for individual medical, travel or personal insurance. Participants are strongly advised to take out their own personal insurance policies.   

In case an unforeseen event would force ESTRO to cancel the meeting, the Society will reimburse the participants fully the registration fees. ESTRO will not be responsible for the refund of travel and accommodation costs.

In case of cancellation, full refund of the registration fee minus 15% for administrative costs may be obtained up to three months before the course and 50% of the fee up to one month before the course. No refund will be made if the cancellation request is postmarked less than one month before the start of the course.

Reduced fees

Members from emerging countries may register at a preferential rate of 350 Euro. Emerging country fee applies to individuals from low-income and lower-middle-income economies according to the World Bank listing here.

Additionally, all specialties from the following countries can benefit from this preferential rate: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine.  In addition, medical physicists from Cyprus can email education@estro.org to apply for this fee.

The preferential rate of 350 Euro is granted automatically when the three conditions below are met:

  1. Only ESTRO members for 2023 are eligible 
  2. Only one course per person per year can be subsidized by ESTRO
  3. Sponsored candidates are not entitled to reduced fees (the invoicing address has to be the one of the participant)
