ESTRO 2024

It is my great pleasure to invite you to ESTRO 2024 which will take place from 3 to 7 May in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

The ambition of ESTRO to further reinforce radiation oncology as a core partner in multidisciplinary cancer care, and to guarantee accessible and high-value radiation therapy for all cancer patients who need it, is expressed in the society’s vision statement for 2030: ‘Radiation Oncology. Optimal Health for All, Together.’

Building on previous congresses, the next step towards this goal is to reflect and act on the radiotherapy opportunities and challenges brought on, and brought to light, around the world in recent years. With this aim, the congress theme is Radiation Oncology: Bridging the Care Gap.

The programme will take a comprehensive look at where radiotherapy is today and where it is going, as well as focussing on where we can bridge gaps in provision of optimal radiotherapy to all. The theme will be reflected throughout the programme via state-of-the-art sessions. Along with symposia, debates and teaching lectures, the scientific programme will feature panel discussions and pitch sessions. Joint sessions with partner associations will connect delegates with new communities and increase the reach of the ESTRO population. Fostering the development of young radiation oncology professionals remains a top priority for ESTRO and therefore the Young Track will continue to provide educational activities focussed on those in the earlier stages of their careers. All sessions will promote the interaction between faculty and audience.

We will continue to optimise the contributions from submitted abstracts. The best abstract submitted to each track will be celebrated in the Best Proffered Papers plenary session. Other sessions will showcase the Latest Clinical Trials and Late-breaking Papers. The highly popular mini-oral sessions will continue, enhancing the visibility of your submitted research, while poster discussion sessions offer you a platform to showcase your work. We will continue to emphasise the interdisciplinarity of the ESTRO scientific programme by calling for abstracts which are of interest to a broad range of disciplines.

Networking with corporate partners is always invaluable. ESTRO 2024 will host Europe’s largest industry exhibition in radiation oncology. It will offer you a unique opportunity to interact with industry leaders and to find out about the latest developments in technology, techniques and oncology products.

We look forward to welcoming you in Glasgow.

With warm regards,

Minimize Your Environmental Impact

Committing to the ESTRO Vison, aiming at “Radiotherapy for All, Together”, means also being mindful of our use of resources striving for a sustainable world, and be responsible for the impact we have with our actions towards society.

We encourage you, as scientists and leaders in oncology, to contribute to a more sustainable future. Here are some practical suggestions to help us all make a difference. Small actions can lead to significant outcomes.

Consider travelling by train to Glasgow!

Glasgow is conveniently accessible by train from numerous European cities and is directly connected by rail to London. With daily direct trains taking just over 4 hours on average, opting for train travel can significantly reduce your carbon footprint compared to flying—by a factor of between 5 and 42 times per kilometer. Prioritize train travel whenever feasible.

Various websites offer valuable information and assistance in finding optimal train connections to Glasgow from your location. Enjoy the ride!

People Make Glasgow Greener: sustainable actions while you are in Glasgow

Glasgow means “Dear Green Place” and today the city still lives up to its name. Glasgow is a city that invests a lot in sustainability, and so does the congress venue.

Some tips to Go Greener in Glasgow:

ESTRO will also reduce the printed material, using the app as much as possible, and avoid having delegate congress bags.

What is the venue doing to be more sustainable?

The SEC, our venue in Glasgow, is proud to have a Sustainability Strategy, launched in 2022. The SEC Sustainability Strategy centres around five key goals: climate, governance, partnership, people and resource, each providing the focus for the work that lies ahead.

The strategy includes objectives around water efficiency, green travel, supply chain engagement and waste management. Further details are available on the SEC website: Welcome to SEC Net Zero 2030 | SEC

As part of the Sustainability Strategy, SEC commits to become a Net Zero campus by 2030. In 2024, the roadmap was released outlining the strategy to achieve this ambition: Net Zero Roadmap | SEC

Here are some of the actions that SEC is putting in place, and we thank them for this:

Sustainable Food Strategy and initiatives

  • Using 80% Scottish sourced produce as a minimum
  • Creating menus that are 50% plant forward
  • Using high quality local producers with high animal welfare standards
  • Suppliers becoming signatories of the climate hub
  • Levy UK and Ireland have signed up to Race to Zero in line with sbti criteria
  • Generating less than 1% food waste by 2025 or sooner. All remaining food waste will be sent for anaerobic digestion or donated to Launch Foods
  • 70% of meat, dairy and vegetables from regenerative agriculture by 2030
  • Surplus non-perishable food is donated to local charity Launch Foods, and in 2020 around 10,000 food items were distributed through local community organisations and schools.

Recycling & Waste

  • To help eliminate single use plastic waste, Stack Cup have been introduced for live events in 2022. Stack Cup will replace single use plastic cups with a reusable and sustainable alternative. The Stack Cup initiative will result in the Scottish Event Campus saving 2 million plastic cups per year and reducing our carbon footprint by 1,500 tonnes in the next 10 years.
  • The SEC general waste is processed at the Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre (GRREC) operated by Viridor for recycling and recovery. The GRREG is a new, state-of-the-art recycling and sustainable waste management facility which uses advanced technology to transform the management of Glasgow’s residual waste.
  • Waste that is segregated onsite, which includes food, glass, cardboard, dry mixed recycling, wood and metal is sent directly to offsite recycling and processing facilities.

Transport

  • Delegates are encouraged to use public transport, walk or cycle to the SEC: extensive guidance on green transport options on the SEC website: Accessibility | Visitor Information | SEC, Glagsow
  • SEC’s buggy for transferring visitors with reduced mobility around the campus is fully electric, as is the buggy used to collect the waste bins for collection.
  • SEC operates a cycle to work scheme.

Biodiversity

  • SEC has 3 bee colonies onsite with over 100,000 bees which are native to the nearby Pollokshields area.
  • The wildlife friendly planting scheme ensures the welfare of the bees by providing them with the best opportunity to collect pollen.

The ESTRO annual congress has the largest scientific programme for any radiation oncology meeting in Europe. It can be daunting to work your way through this programme to identify topics of interest to you.

The ESTRO Scientific Council is launching a new initiative during ESTRO 2024 in Glasgow to provide guidance for newcomers and highlight a clear path through the various tracks in the programme for attendees with common interests.

The newly launched ESTRO focus groups have developed Programme Journeys on several topics:

If you have an interest in these topics, you can consult the proposed journeys and receive a tailor-made, interdisciplinary programme to follow across the congress tracks.

You can sign up for a journey via the relevant form and receive more information on how to meet peers sharing the same interests as you as well as the focus groups who developed these journeys. Use this opportunity to develop your own network at the ESTRO 2024 congress in Glasgow!
