Less is more: The increasing use of hypofractionation in routine clinical practice and its impact on patient care
Maeve Kearney, Ireland
Delivering a radiation therapy (RT) course over a shorter period expands access to RT services and during Covid 19 facilitated reducing patient close contact exposures in the RT department. With similar clinical benefits to conventional fractionation regimens, the use of hypofractionation treatment regimens is increasing in routine clinical practice. However, such a shift in radiation therapy practice should be considered carefully. During this session we will look at some of these considerations. IGRT schedules must be updated to reflect the increased risk of geometric uncertainties when delivering larger doses per fraction. Patient management must also be reviewed to ensure that optimum patient care is provided during shorter courses which may require an increased focus on patient self-care.
