In the era of personalised medicine, oncology is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by advances in molecular diagnostics, targeted therapies, radiotherapy innovations, and cutting-edge technologies. While these breakthroughs promise improved patient outcomes and more precise treatments, they also raise critical challenges regarding equity and accessibility. The increasing complexity and cost of personalised approaches risk widening the gap between patients who can benefit from these advancements and those who cannot, creating global, national, and regional disparities.
This course explores the subtle balance between cutting-edge oncological research and the need for equitable access to care. Key discussions will address the role of precision medicine in shaping modern oncology, the evolution of radiotherapy techniques for more effective and personalised treatments, the economic and ethical implications of high-cost therapies, and strategies to ensure that innovation remains accessible to all patients, regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location.
Through a multidisciplinary perspective—including contributions from clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and patient advocates—we will analyse current barriers to accessibility, the sustainability of innovative therapies and radiotherapy technologies, and the policies needed to bridge the gap between research and real-world implementation. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, this course aspires to identify practical solutions that uphold scientific progress and healthcare equity in oncology.
