For several years, the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg (Germany) has successfully offered courses in the field of particle therapy. The courses are organised under the auspices of the Heidelberg Institute of Radiation Oncology (HIRO) in close cooperation with the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT) and the University Hospital Heidelberg.

The Hybrid Teaching Course on Particle Therapy (course type 3) is dedicated to national and international scientists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and students and post-docs who would like to gain a deepened understanding of the physics of particle therapy and its clinical application. FLASH radiotherapy with particles will also be introduced.

The course is subdivided into an online phase of about six weeks (from 6 October to 16 November 2025), followed by online sessions on Zoom on 17 and 18 November. The hybrid attendance phase in Heidelberg or on Zoom is scheduled for 20-21 November. During the online phase, participants gain access to the virtual learning platform Moodle with learning materials such as pre-recorded video lectures and PDF scripts, and they are set short tasks to work on in small groups. The online sessions and the hybrid attendance phase provide interactive sessions such as to discuss case-based scenarios or for and against discussions as well as live lectures. It allows for exchange between our experts and national and international participants in order to strengthen collaboration and the individual learning process.

HIT is one of the largest radiation therapy centres in Europe, with its isocentric gantry and teachers with many years of experience in online-enhanced or hybrid teaching settings, so it is an excellent place for the further education of physicians, physicists and young scientists.

Dates:

  1. Registration deadline: 29 September
  2. Online phase: 6 October-16 November
  3. Online sessions on Zoom: 17-18 November
  4. Hybrid attendance phase in Heidelberg or on Zoom: 20-21 November
