Physics for Modern Radiotherapy - PDF Version

27 September – 1 October 2021, online course

Course director:

Eduard Gershkevitsh, chief medical physicist, North Estonia Medical Centre, Tallinn,
Estonia

I am Jelena Moravčević, a medical physicist in the Department of Medical Physics at the Oncology Institute of Vojvodina, Serbia. I graduated with an MSc in medical physics from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. I am also a member of the Serbian Association of Medical Physicists.

As the youngest member of my team who has been working in the field of radiotherapy for one year, I chose to take this European SocieTy for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) course in order to review and improve my knowledge. I thought it would give me a good opportunity to expand my knowledge in the field of modern radiotherapy.

This was a very interesting course led by Eduard Gershkevitsh. The course took place online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many topics were covered, some of which I already knew and some I learned. We were able to listen to the pre-recorded lectures prior to the course, and this was very useful as it helped me to better understand the lectures during their presentation online.

The most interesting aspect of the course was the homework assignments. Homework consisted of three clinical cases that we had to resolve before the course began. This exercise was a very useful and practical part of the course. Course participants who had different levels of professional experience presented their solutions and we discussed them. At the end of the day, there was a summary and Q&A session that helped us to improve our understanding of the lectures and enabled us to ask questions, which the lecturers gladly answered.

The course was held online, which had its advantages, but the main goal of the course was for participants to gain as much knowledge as possible, to get to know other participants and to hear their experiences in the field. Therefore, I hope that in future this course will be held in person. The course is intended for everyone who enters the world of radiotherapy; the lectures are very carefully prepared so that everyone can understand them regardless of prior knowledge, and the teachers are very good lecturers and very patient to answer all questions in detail.
