These professionals bring a fantastic wealth of diverse, regional expertise from across Europe, and they are dedicated to advancing patient safety, robust quality frameworks, and evidence-based practice.

Please join us in welcoming our three incoming experts:

  • Fatjona Kraja (Albania): a clinical oncologist and lecturer who combines clinical practice with deep dedication to quality indicators, oncology education, and the management of treatment side-effects and adverse events.
  • Berkay Ergüney (Georgia): a chief radiation therapist (RTT) and biomedical engineer who is focused on workforce education, dissemination of accessible information via social media, and management of the risk posed by in-house software and artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
  • Aleksandar Kostovski (Croatia): a chief RTT with 25 years of experience who specialises in clinical workflow optimisation, robust process design for advanced techniques (such as SRT/SBRT), and safety integration early in radiotherapy processes.

From implementing cutting-edge AI safety protocols to strengthening regional education and clinical workflows, their unique perspectives will be invaluable to our global community.

 

Fatjona Kraja

I am a lecturer in oncology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Medicine, Tirana, Albania, and a clinical oncologist at the University Hospital Centre “Mother Teresa” also in Tirana. Since 2014, I have combined clinical practice with teaching and research, with a particular focus on improving the quality, safety, and effectiveness of cancer care. My professional development has included clinical training and research fellowships through the European School of Oncology (ESO), the European Society for Medical Oncology, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the EU Horizon 2020 initiative and post-doctoral studies with a Fulbright scholarship. These opportunities enabled me to gain experience in advanced radiotherapy techniques, including adaptive radiotherapy, re-irradiation, radiobiology and particle therapy, while developing a strong interest in quality and safety in radiation therapy.

My research interests include cancer epidemiology, treatment outcomes, radiotherapy toxicity, and quality of life in cancer patients. I have contributed to several European initiatives through ESTRO, the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer, European co-operation in science and technology actions, and the European Commission. Since 2025, I have also served as a faculty member of the ESO, supporting education and professional development in oncology.

My motivation for joining the ESTRO ROSQC stems from a strong commitment to advancing patient safety, quality assurance, and evidence-based practice in radiation oncology. Working in Albania’s only radiotherapy centre has highlighted the importance of robust quality systems, standardised protocols, risk management, and continuous improvement in the delivery of safe and equitable care. I am particularly interested in quality indicators and in translating safety and quality recommendations into everyday clinical practice and oncology education.

I see ROSQC as a platform from which to collaborate with multidisciplinary experts from across Europe, to contribute to initiatives that advance safety and quality in radiation oncology, and to support the development and dissemination of best practices. I look forward to sharing experiences from a developing radiotherapy environment, learning from colleagues across diverse healthcare systems, and contributing to efforts that promote high-quality, patient-centred, and safe radiation oncology services.

Berkay Ergüney

 I am an RTT and biomedical engineer, and I currently serve as chief RTT at the Radiation Medicine Centre in Tbilisi, Georgia. In this role, I manage projects to improve patient experience, treatment quality and safe use of clinical technology. It is fulfilling to see both our patients and team respond positively to developments as we implement our evidence-based modern practices.

In addition, due to the absence of national formal education of allied-health professionals, I am focused on designing and delivering our in-house RTT course, which is tailored to regional and global challenges, including high workforce turnover and RTT retention.

I am the founder of the RadiotherapyNews social media platform. This platform shares summaries of recent developments in radiotherapy in a centralised format. This initiative addresses the need for dissemination of accessible updates across our field. I strongly believe that increasing awareness of the work produced by societies and institutions is as important as the work itself.

I have also developed several software tools that support radiotherapy departments in analytics and workflow management. This has led to a strong interest in software validation and risk management of applications that are developed in-house, particularly in the context of rapidly evolving AI tools.

Combining these experiences, my interests in joining the ESTRO ROSQC are to improve the reach of the committee’s work, to become a voice for underrepresented member states, and to contribute to the safe implementation of AI tools in radiotherapy.

Aleksandar Kostovski

 I am Aleksandar Kostovski, chief radiation technologist for radiotherapy at the Special Oncology Hospital - Medikol in Zagreb, Croatia. This is a private oncology institution, currently under construction as a strategic investment project of the Government of the Republic of Croatia. The centre will provide comprehensive oncological services, focusing on advanced radiotherapy and multidisciplinary cancer care.

My current focus is on the development of the clinical and organisational foundations of this new radiotherapy service, building safe, efficient, and sustainable workflows from the outset. I value the integration of safety, innovation, and evidence-based practice into clinical process design from the start.

Education is central to my career. I previously lectured in radiological technology programmes at universities in Skopje and Banja Luka, and I continue to contribute as a guest lecturer at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb. These activities reflect my commitment to strengthening clinical competence and supporting the safe regional adoption of advanced radiotherapy.

My main professional interests are quality improvement, risk management, and optimisation of clinical workflows. I contribute to regional expert committees and European meetings such as the annual congress of the South and East Europe Technology in Radiation Oncology group, where I can exchange knowledge on safety, workflow standardisation, and ways to improve continuously. I have previously participated in the implementation of quality indicators and metrics (key performance indicators and comprehensive prognostic indices) to support systematic monitoring of patient safety and treatment consistency and efficiency.

An important focus of my work is the safe, structured implementation of advanced techniques such as SRT and SBRT, with a specific focus on motion management and robust process design. Strengthening safety culture and ensuring that clinical pathways are standardised are vital when introducing complex technologies.

My motivation for joining the ESTRO ROSQC is to contribute to the collective European effort to strengthen safety and quality in radiotherapy. With 25 years of clinical and managerial experience, I aim to advance discussions on risk management, ways to learn from adverse events, and the responsible integration of emerging technologies, including AI, into clinical practice.
