November holds a special place in the heart of Türkiye’s radiation oncology community. Since 2015, 25 November has been officially recognized as National Radiation Oncology Day, an initiative led by the Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology (TROD). This day celebrates the essential contributions of radiation oncologists, physicists, nurses, and technical staff in the fight against cancer.
These dates carry deep historical significance:
- 8 November 1895 – Discovery of X-rays by W. Conrad Röntgen, the foundation of radiotherapy.
- 7 November 1867 – Birth of Marie Curie, a pioneer of radioactivity.
- 25 November 1993 – Founding of TROD, linking the month to both scientific legacy and institutional history.
Radiotherapy is a modern, life-saving treatment used alone or alongside other therapies for millions of cancer patients worldwide. Yet, 70% of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, largely due to limited access to modern radiotherapy. In Türkiye, many public university hospitals urgently need infrastructure updates, highlighting the critical impact of investment in radiotherapy.
With a strong commitment to awareness, advocacy, and progress, TROD invites the oncology community to unite in celebrating the science, service, and future of radiation oncology this November. The day highlights the evolution and achievements of radiation oncology in Türkiye while fostering public understanding of its vital role in cancer care.
Each year, TROD organizes:
- Public awareness campaigns and media events
- Educational sessions in hospitals and universities
- Recognition awards for excellence in clinical practice, research, and service
- National outreach to policymakers emphasizing investment in cancer care infrastructure
As 25 November 2025 approaches, preparations are already underway for a nationwide celebration that unites the oncology community and honors over a century of innovation and service.
