Report on: International Conference on Monte Carlo Techniques for Medical Applications - PDF Version

The International Conference on Monte Carlo Techniques for Medical Applications was held in the heart of the historic city of Antwerp, Belgium, from 11-13 April 2022. Due to the covid-19 pandemic it took three years for this conference to be organised. The previous one was held in 2019 in Montreal. Canada.

The meeting presented the latest findings in the field of Monte Carlo radiation transport applied to radiotherapy, radiobiology and to a lesser extent in radiology. New cancer treatment modalities, such as flash radiotherapy, were included for the first time. Much attention was given to Monte Carlo modelling in radiobiology, where in recent years highly complex models for interactions of radiation at the nanoscale been developed. Monte Carlo methods are still evolving rapidly and are now also stating to be combined with artificial intelligence techniques.

The three day conference was attended by 136 participants, most of them in their early career stages, with only a few people attending online. An active role was also played by the equipment vendors who presented their latest products in a dedicated session.
