The landscape of cancer treatments has been revolutionised by the introduction of various immunotherapeutic agents, notably immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, only a limited fraction of patients obtain long-term clinical benefit from immunotherapy. In this context, radiotherapy has emerged as a promising tool by which to extend the therapeutic potential of immunotherapy. At least in some instances, radiotherapy can indeed elicit an “in situ vaccination” effect to jumpstart tumor-targeting immune responses that can be amplified with immunotherapy. However, radiotherapy can also mediate a variety of immunosuppressive effects and several obstacles remain to thwart the widespread implementation of successful radio-immunotherapeutic combinations in the clinic. Since 2016, Weill Cornell Medicine and Institut Gustave Roussy have joined forces to organise an annual conference that provides a forum for education, discussion and networking among investigators interested in developing safe and effective radio-immunotherapeutic combinations. Each year, ImmunoRad provides a unique opportunity to extend the assorted and interactive community of researchers working on assorted radio-immunotherapeutic combinations, including those at an early career stage as well as experienced scientists, radiation and medical oncologists. This engenders a sparkling environment for sharing knowledge and accelerating research in this exciting field of study. The next edition will take place at Centre de Recherche des Cordeliers with 37 speakers drawn from a variety of disciplines including cancer immunology, cell and molecular biology, computational biology, medical physics, immuno-oncology and radiation oncology. Presentations will cover basic through to clinical research, providing an opportunity for lively discussion over recent discoveries of resistance mechanisms and strategies to overcome them, notwithstanding predictive biomarker identification, patient management, and clinical trial design. The conference will also include a Primer Educational Session on “Cancer Immunology, Radiations and Immunotherapy”; two keynote lectures from Ralph Weichselbaum and Fabrice André; a Champaign Cocktail Poster Session and a Gala Dinner at the Musée du Vin in the most chic area of Paris adjacent to the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. The size of our event makes it a perfect place to network with other researchers and clinicians across a spectrum from academia to industry, with the ultimate goal of fostering progress in the field at both preclinical and clinical levels.
