What does this award mean to you?
Receiving the Elsevier Young Researcher Award at the ESTRO2023 conference was a fulfilling experience. The acknowledgement of my work not only brought me immense pride but also fueled my motivation to push further in my scientific pursuits. This award holds special significance as it follows my previous recognition by ESTRO and the opportunity to deliver the highest-scoring abstract under the physics track as my award lecture at ESTRO2019. Being able to receive recognition in both physics and clinical tracks highlights the true interdisciplinarity nature of our work and the unique contributions we make to the field of radiation oncology. It is a testament to the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and its practical application, ultimately leading to advancements in patient care and outcomes. This award further inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge, pursuing excellence in both physics and clinical aspects, and contributing to the growth and development of our field.
This award not only validates my contributions to the scientific community but also serves as a testament to the expertise and support of my team in Manchester, as well as the invaluable contributions of my international collaborators. I am sincerely grateful for the acknowledgment and support extended by Elsevier and ESTRO.
What is your next challenge?
My next challenge is to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge in cancer treatment and further advancing my research in radiation oncology. I aim to explore new avenues of investigation, collaborate with experts in the field internationally, and contribute to innovative solutions that enhance patient care.
What do you think are the next challenges for radiation oncologists (or radiation physicists, radiobiologists, RTTs, and brachytherapists)?
The upcoming tasks involve utilising technological advancements and refining treatment techniques. It is crucial to improve precision and effectiveness while minimising side effects. Additionally, addressing disparities in access to radiotherapy services and implementing strategies for better patient-centered care are important challenges.
What has been your involvement within ESTRO?
Within ESTRO, I have actively presented my research work at annual conferences and attended ESTRO pre-meetings and school courses. I have been an invited speaker for pre-meeting courses and during the annual conference, as well as a chair of sessions at ESTRO. I also won the yESTRO quiz in 2020. I am excited to share with the community that I have recently become a new member of the yESTRO committee, starting in May 2023.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I engage in my lifelong passion for painting. Lately, I have been focusing more on digital painting and illustration. This pastime allows me to explore my creativity and express myself artistically. Painting has always been a source of relaxation and joy and I find great satisfaction in bringing my imagination to life through visual art.
