Biography

Prof. Moura has worked over 20 years at Radiation Oncology Department in Hospital CUF Descobertas, Lisbon, with the main activities focused on patient care and QA and risk management, implementation and optimization of new technologies and techniques from treatment planning to treatment delivery and verification protocols, from 3D to 4D Radiotherapy. From 2003, he has started as an Assistant Teacher and Mentor at Superior School of Health Technology of Lisbon - Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa (ESTeSL), with the main educational fields related to virtual simulation and treatment planning. From 2009 to the present, Prof. Moura worked as an Associate Professor for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at ESTeSL, covering topics such as, positioning and immobilisation, methods and techniques, patient care, clinical radiotherapy, applied radiobiology, imaging for planning, virtual simulation, treatment planning and research tutoring. During 2008, he has completed his Master of Sciences (MSc.) degree programme in Biophysics, with specialization in medical physics and biomedical engineering, at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University, on which he has worked as a Research Assistant in Haaglanden Medical Centre, The Hague, with research topic on a-Si detector panel damage: correlating physical parameters to clinical usability. From 2017 became a Certified Professor with specialist degree, by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, with the research focused on Error analysis in Radiotherapy: Impact of verification protocols on variability and treatment margins. Prof. Moura has delivered over 40 conference and courses presentations as an invited speaker in plenary and educational sessions both at national and international levels, with topics related to: Error analysis; off-line and on-line protocols; treatment margins; virtual simulation; image registration; contouring; 3DCRT; Intensity Modulated RT; Image Guided RT; Surface Guided RT; Stereotactic Body RT; education and training for Radiation Therapists; competences and qualifications; advanced practice; professional profile. Prof. Moura also took roles as reviewer for scientific journals (Reports of Practical Oncology and Radiotherapy | Radiation Oncology). As part of development of qualifications and professional development at a European level, Prof. Moura enrolled with the SAFEEUROPE (Safe And Free Exchange of EU Radiography Professionals across Europe) an European project financed by the European Commission, led by the University of Ulster, to investigate and identify the gaps between the skills required by RTTs to perform their duties in comparison with the educational training provided across Europe. In 2011, at the 1st ESTRO FORUM, London, Prof. Moura was elected to lead the RTT Committee and later on became a member of the Scientific Council and the Advisory Committee on Radiation Oncology Practice (ACROP). Prof. Moura priorities and responsibilities as RTTC chairman was, to promote and develop a comprehensive network for improvement both scientific and professional communication between RTTs and other RO professionals within ESTRO, European and worldwide, along with facilitating issues and requests from the National Societies. At this level Prof. Moura was enrolled in the first ESTRO National Societies Task Force, established in 2012, which later on, would turn into the National Societies Committee, to better fill the needs and requirements from National Societies across Europe. Since 2006, Prof. Moura have been a member of several steering groups at Portuguese Association of Radiation Therapists (ART) for Continuous professional development, Code of Ethics, Professional regulation and national Qualifications for Radiation Therapists. From 2013 became the vice-president of ART and early 2017 became officially the President of ART. In 2022 has started as a full member of Young-Early Career Investigator Radiation Oncology Scientific Council (Y-ECI-ROSC) at EORTC. From 2022 became Associate Professor of Red Cross Higher Health School, as radiotherapy specialist in the graduate course on Medical Imaging and Radiothwerapy. Currently, Filipe Moura professional development and research is mainly focus on higher education, best practice and clinical protocols optimization for IG-SBRT/SRS coupled with SGRT technology.
