Biography

Sofia Parveen graduated in 2004 with BSc Hons in Radiotherapy and has worked for University Hospitals Birmingham for 17 years. She worked as a Therapy Radiographer for 10 years before joining Radiotherapy Physics. Her current role is leading the Brachytherapy planning service and breath-hold research. Her enthusiasm for the use of breath-hold in radiotherapy started during her final year dissertation which was based on reducing radiation dose to cardiac tissue for left-sided breast cancer patients. From here an opportunity arose to pursue a 12-month research secondment investigating if breast cancer patients could prolong breath holds >5 minutes. This secondment piqued her interest in research and she has pursued her passion ever since. Sofia has gone onto contribute to many publications regarding breath hold and breathing motion ever since. Brachytherapy is her other passion and Sofia is currently working on developing the Gynaecology and Prostate HDR service at University Hospitals Birmingham. Future work involves implementing the Geneva applicator into clinical use, as well as moving away from CT based planning to MRI only planning. Sofia’s goal in life is to make a difference in people’s lives no matter how small or large, direct or indirect. She continues to strive for perfection and better radiation treatment for her patients.
