Biography

Dr. Daniel Petereit is a radiation oncologist at the Cancer Care Institute in Rapid City, South Dakota, the current president of the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS), and leads a cancer disparity program called Walking Forward that has been funded by the NCI since 2003. The goal of the program is to lower cancer mortality rates for Northern Plains American Indians (AIs) through patient navigation, clinical trial access, and identification of barriers to early detection and successful treatment as AIs have some of the highest cancer mortality rates in the US. Phase II clinical trials were conducted for common disease sites, prostate & breast cancer, emphasizing a reduction in treatment times using IMRT and brachytherapy (BT), as it was hypothesized that distance was a barrier to treatment since AIs live 140 miles from the cancer center. Critical outcomes included facilitating cancer screening for 3,300 patients, 10% (4,500) accrual rate on clinical trials, increased compliance for those undergoing cancer treatment, identification of specific barriers to effective cancer screening and cancer care, successful completion of a genetic study (ATM), and ongoing strategies to maintain sustainability. In March of 2018, Walking Forward initiated a “large scale” lung cancer screening program for those at risk, and just received NCI funding to initiate palliative care on the reservations. As ABS president, he is leading the 300 in 10 initiative where the goal is to train 30 competent brachytherapists per year over the next 10 years. This program will have international implications as well.
