Biography

Carsten Herskind studied physics, chemistry, and medical sciences, at Aarhus University, Denmark. Specializing in medical radiation physics he graduated in Physics & Chemistry and worked as a medical physicist before starting postgraduate studies in Radiation Biology. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Biology, he worked at the MRC Radiobiology Unit, Harwell (UK), the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford University (UK), the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg (Germany), and in the Division of Radiobiology and Molecular Environmental Research, University Hospital Tübingen (Germany). Since 2002 he is head of the Cellular and Molecular Radiation Oncology Laboratory at the Radiation Oncology Department, Universitätsmedizin Mannheim, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University (Germany). His research interests focus on prediction and mechanisms of normal-tissue reaction after radiotherapy, and on the biological response to standard and very large doses per fraction of high- and low-energy X-rays.
