Biography

Erik VAN LIMBERGEN (°1953), MD, PhD, is prof emeritus at Leuven University since 2018. After obtaining a medical degree maximum cum laude at the Leuven University, he completed his training in radiation oncology at the University Hospitals in Leuven at the Institut Gustave Roussy and Hôpital Henry Mondor in Paris. He obtained a certificate in Radiobiology at the University Paris XIII at Kremlin Bicêtre. He obtained a PhD with his thesis on: Breast Conserving Treatment for Breast Cancer: a decision making model based on qualitative and quantitative clinical parameters. He was staff member at the University Hospitals in Leuven since 1983 working in the field of breast and gynaecological cancers, skin and soft tissue sarcomas. He was head of the Leuven University Centre for Cancer Prevention (LUCK) and took actively part in the implementation of the Flemish breast screening programme He was an active member within ESTRO and past chair of the GEC-ESTRO Brachytherapy Committee (2006). He was director of the GEC-ESTRO Teaching Course of Modern Brachytherapy Techniques from 2000 to 2018 and co–editor of the GEC-ESTRO Handbook of Brachytherapy. He is author / co author of more than 250 papers, published abstracts, and book chapters including several GEC-ESTRO recommendations. He became honorary member of the Austrian Society of Radiation Oncology in 2004 and of the Société Française de Radiothérapie Oncologie in 2008 and an ESTRO LifeTime Achievement Award in 2018 and The GEC-ESTRO Iridium Awrd in 2021 . .
