Emmanuel van der Schueren Award  

The Emmanuel van der Schueren Award is given in honour of the founding father of ESTRO and in recognition of excellent scientific work, enormous contribution within ESTRO to the field of education and promotion of radiation oncology as a discipline. 

The ESTRO Board decides on the recipient of the award. 

The recipient of this prestigious award delivers a lecture at the ESTRO Annual Meeting. 

The Emmanuel van der Schueren Award is published in the Abstract Book of the ESTRO Annual Meeting where it is presented.

Jens Overgaard Legacy Award

The Jens Overgaard legacy award recognises his outstanding contribution to promoting scholarly science in radiation oncology during his 25-year tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Radiotherapy & Oncology.

The recipient of this award delivers a lecture at the ESTRO annual Meeting. The Jens Overgaard award is published in the Abstract Book of the ESTRO Annual Meeting where it is presented.

Honorary Physicist Award

This award is given at the ESTRO Annual Meeting.

Previous recipients have been people who, although not physicists, have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of physics in ESTRO, by raising the profile of physicists in the radiation oncology community or to the development of the field of physics in clinical radiotherapy.

The recipient of this prestigious award delivers a lecture at the ESTRO Annual Meeting.

The Honorary Physicist Award is published in the Abstract Book of the ESTRO Annual Meeting where it is presented.

GEC-ESTRO Iridium 192 Award

The "GEC-ESTRO Iridium Award" is presented to the brachytherapist or physicist who, in the opinion of the GEC-ESTRO Committee members, has made a major contribution to the development of the Brachytherapy speciality.

The recipient of this prestigious award delivers a lecture at the ESTRO Annual Meeting.

The GEC-ESTRO Iridium Award is published in the Abstract Book of the ESTRO Annual Meeting where it is presented.

Breur Award Lecture  

The Breur Award is named after Prof. Klaas Breur one of the founding fathers of ESTRO. If he had not died prematurely in 1981 he would probably have become ESTRO's first president. Professor Breur was the head of the Radiotherapy Department of the Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis van Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam) and participated in founding the EORTC.

As a tribute to Professor Breur’s pioneering work, ESTRO created this annual “Gold Medal“ award lecture in his name. The Breur Award is the highest honour that can be conferred on an ESTRO member and is awarded in recognition of the major contribution made by the winner to European Radiotherapy.

The Breur Award is published in the Abstract Book of the ESTRO Annual Meeting where it is presented.

Donal Hollywood Award

The Hollywood Award is given in the memory of ESTRO President-Elect Donal Hollywood, who passed away from cancer before taking on the duties of President. This annual award is given to the best abstract selected for presentation at an ESTRO congress.

The Scientific Programme Committee decides on the recipient of the award from all the submitted/accepted abstracts. Selection criteria are based on clarity, supporting data, scientific rigour, potential significance, interest in the topic chosen and innovation or usefulness, as well as translational work and interdisciplinarity.  

The recipient of this prestigious award delivers a lecture at the ESTRO congress where it is presented and the lecture is published in the abstract book of the said ESTRO congress.

Lifetime Achievement Awards  

The Lifetime Achievement Awards are awarded to an ESTRO member who is at the end of their active career and has contributed tremendously to ESTRO activities.

Honorary Members Awards  

The Honorary Members Awards are awarded to outstanding scientific contributors in the field of oncology. The residence of the nominee is worldwide and not restricted to Europe.

ESTRO Best Presentation Awards

ESTRO sponsors three best presentation awards of 1,000€ each for a Clinician, a Physicist and a Radiation TherapisT.

Criteria for selection

  • Only abstracts accepted for presentation at ESTRO 2022 will be considered for the award.
  • Presentations are evaluated on (in decreasing order of importance): the scientific value of the data; the clarity of the presentation; and the visual quality of the presentation layout.
  • Priority will be given to presentations from young investigators.

How to apply

No application is needed. You are automatically considered if your abstract is accepted. Prizes will be handed out at the ESTRO 2022 Best Presentations Award Ceremony on Saturday 7 May 2022.

 ctRO, phiRO, tipsRO Young Investigator Awards  

The ctRO, phiRO, tipsRO Young Investigator Awards are presented under the auspices of ESTRO’s journals, Clinical & Translational Radiation Oncology (ctRO), Physics & Imaging in Radiation Oncology (phiRO), and Technical Innovations & Patient Support in Radiation Oncology (tipsRO) and are sponsored by Elsevier.

The winners are entitled to a grant of 1,000€ and are invited to submit a paper to the awarding journal which will be published at no cost to the author if accepted following the peer-review process.

Criteria for selection

  • Only abstracts accepted for presentation at ESTRO 2021, by authors under 40 years of age, will be considered for the award.
  • Presentations are evaluated on (in decreasing order of importance): the scientific value of the data; the clarity of the presentation; and the visual quality of the presentation layout.

How to apply

No application is needed. You are automatically considered if your abstract is accepted. Prizes will be handed out at the ESTRO 2022 Best Presentations Award Ceremony on Saturday 7 May 2022.

A prize of 1,000€ will be given for the best abstract in the field of radiation physics or radiation technology submitted for ESTRO 2022.

Criteria for selection

  • Candidates should be an ESTRO member for the year 2022.
  • All ESTRO members under 36 (with the exception of corporate members) are eligible to apply.  
  • Exceptions will be made for female applicants who had to interrupt their research for pregnancy/maternity reasons, for them the maximum age is fixed at 40.

  • A curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages).
  • A cover letter from the Head of Department stating that the work has been done by the applicant.
  • A copy of the abstract on radiation physics or radiation technology which should have been submitted for ESTRO 2022 (indicate abstract number, abstract title and submitting author with your application).

ESTRO-ELEKTA BRACHYTHERAPY AWARD

A prize of 2,000€ will be given to the most innovative paper submitted for presentation in the congress. The winning abstract will be selected by the Scientific Programme Committee.

Criteria for selection

  • Abstracts accepted for oral presentation for the congress will be considered for the award.
  • Since the selection of the winner will be based only on the data provided in the abstract (and not on the presentation) it is advisable that you draft your abstract with extreme care, providing sufficient data for the evaluation by the jury.

How to apply

By submitting a brachytherapy abstract for ESTRO 2022, you are automatically considered for the “ESTRO-Elekta Brachytherapy Award”.

GEC-ESTRO BEST JUNIOR PRESENTATION - Sponsored by Elekta Brachytherapy

A prize of 1,500€ will be given to the best junior presentation for brachytherapy. The winning abstract will be selected by the Scientific Programme Committee.

Criteria for selection

  • Submit an abstract to the brachytherapy track for ESTRO 2022.
  • Applicants should be ‘in training’ members of ESTRO for 2022.

JUNIOR BRACHYTHERAPY TRAVEL GRANTS - Sponsored by Elekta Brachytherapy

ESTRO members currently in training who need support to attend the meeting may apply for the Junior Brachytherapy Travel Grants sponsored by Elekta Brachytherapy. Five grants of € 1,000 are available.

Criteria for selection

  • Applicants should be ‘in training’ members of ESTRO for 2022.

How to apply

Candidates should submit one PDF file by email to Jessica Pledge (contact details below) containing in this order:

  • A cover letter from the Head of Department stating that the work has been done by the ‘in training’ member.
  • A motivation letter indicating their interest in brachytherapy and reasons why you should be considered for this grant. Please indicate your full name, age and ESTRO membership type in your letter.

Priority will be given to applicants who have an abstract accepted for the congress and to the presentation type for the accepted abstract in this order: oral communication (proffered paper); mini-oral; poster (poster discussion; digital poster).
