How to combine different treatment modalities in rectal cancer
Large clinical trials have demonstrated improved outcome for patients with rectal cancer when treated with a multimodal approach. Intensification strategies in the neoadjuvant setting are debated, as well as the possibility of omitting surgery in certain patients. Here we will discuss current and new oncological criteria for the multimodal treatment, as well as current and new standards for surgery in rectal cancer. New options in the rectal cancer treatment pipeline will be presented, such as organ preservation and total neoadjuvant treatment, and the impact of the different treatment options on the patient’s quality of life.
