Project Summary

This project is funded by Directorate General Research - EURATOM - Nuclear Fission - Radiation Protection and Health

EU Contract No:   TREN/07/NUCL/S07.71512
Acronym:   CLINICAL AUD
Framework:   6  for LIFESCIHEALTH
Action Type:
Number of Partners:    6
Project Coordinator:   STUK (Radiation & Nuclear Safety Authority)
Duration: 2 years (1/05/2007 – 31/12/2008)

The EC directive 97/43/EURATOM (MED-directive) introduced the concept of Clinical Audit for the assessment of medical radiological practices (diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy), and the Member States are required to implement it in accordance with national procedures.

So far there has been high variation between the Member States in the implementation of clinical audits so the EC established in June 2007 a special project to review in detail the status of implementation of Clinical Audits in Member States and to prepare Guidance on Clinical Audits. The purpose of this project is to provide clear and comprehensive information on existing procedures and criteria for Clinical Audits in radiological practices (diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy) and to provide guidance on clinical auditing including best possible standardization for an improved implementation of the afore mentioned directory. The guidance will enable the member States to adopt the model of clinical audit with respect to their national legislation and administrative provisions.

The study endeavours to clarify the terminology used, define its core elements and provide examples of the various approaches and best practice and demonstrate how the most beneficial harmonization and standardization can be achieved. The guide will be aimed at radiological practitioners, hospital management, auditing organizations and competent authorities, to improve their awareness of their responsibilities and duties.
