CLINICAL COMMITTEE

Clinicians have been centrally important to the success of ESTRO and have served at the highest level on the Society’s Board, the Steering Committee, Education & Training Committee and other committees together with a wide range of ad hoc groups advising on many issues ranging from the very successful Annual Scientific Meeting to the expanding spectrum of Teaching Courses.

Recognising the wide range of special and occasionally unique issues that are increasingly important to clinicians, the ESTRO Board decided to appoint the first ‘Clinical Committee’ in 2007.

The Committee endeavours to explore a wide range of existing ‘day to day’ issues together with emerging strategic issues relevant to radiation oncologists as members of the Society.  The critical role of research and the development of mechanisms that enable and support evidence-based multidisciplinary treatment approaches for patients and their families are central to the Committee’s thinking and strategic goals.  Since its inception, the Committee has initiated wide-ranging discussions on a number of major thematic areas of interest to ESTRO clinicians together with areas of potential concern or uncertainty.  These include:

  1. Developing the clinical programme for the annual ESTRO meeting
  2. Radiation research and EU grants: to propose a strategic plan (topics, general strategy, work flow, organisation) for proposals for EU grants, i.e. to generate calls with high chance of funding of radiation research, to be more competitive.
  3. The future development of the clinical discipline with Europe
  4. Emerging models of service organisation in Europe
  5. Professional role and skill mix of European Radiation Oncologists
  6. ESTRO interaction and involvement in clinical trials
